An enormous 24 feet high carved out statue of Maitreya (future Buddha) on the roadside is another interesting landmark of the village. You can reach here from Flights to Madurai. From Mublekh the highway mines into a lunar landscape and then climbs up the 3,718 metres Namikala pass, the second highest on the route and then runs up to the 30 kilometres distant, the highest Fotu La Pass 4,094 metres. From Fotu La pas Lamayuru is just 15 kilometres away. This little village 309 kilometres from srinagar and l25 kilometes from Leh has the oldest monastery dating back to the tenth century.
